The Hilton Central School District Jazz Department and Hilton Music Boosters will present the 15th annual “Hilton Evening of Jazz” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Merton Williams Middle School, 200 School Lane, Hilton.
This year’s event will feature trumpet player Allen Vizzutti, who has played around the country and around the world with Chick Corea, Doc Severinsen, the NBC Tonight Show Band, Chuck Mangione and Jeff Tyzik. The Montana native attended Eastman School of Music on a full scholarship, and earned the only Artist’s Diploma awarded to a wind player in Eastman’s 85-year history.
Vizzutti, who teaches domestically and abroad, is an artist in residency at University of South Carolina. He will hold master classes and workshops with Hilton music students on Feb. 15-16 with trombonist Nick Finzer, a 2005 Hilton graduate.
Finzer will perform with the band during the “Evening of Jazz.” As a young musician, Finzer’s talent was recognized by Wycliffe Gordon, who started a lifelong mentorship by writing four pieces for Finzer while he attended Eastman School of Music. Finzer earned his master’s degree at Juilliard’s jazz program, where he was mentored by trombonist Steve Turre.
Diana Russo, Miss Finger Lakes 2018 and 2014 Hilton graduate, will collect monetary donations and radios at the event. Russo’s platform is Memories Through Music, Alzheimer’s Awareness. She partnered with Jazz 90.1 to provide radios to Alzheimer’s patients in Greater Rochester.
Admission costs $17, and includes performances by Merton Williams Jazz Ensemble and Hilton High School Jazz Ensemble. Tickets are available in advance and at the door. Groups of 10 or more may reserve a table. Proceeds will benefit MWMS and HHS jazz departments as well as Hilton Music Boosters.
