New York state has spoken with one voice, and we have proclaimed that we will not sit idly by while our families and children are terrorized by gun violence.
Over the past several years, we have taken actions to ban assault rifles and strengthen background checks. I was proud to co-sponsor and cast my vote recently in support of legislation that will prohibit domestic violence offenders from possessing a firearm.
We know that 1 in 3 women will be the victim of physical violence by a partner within their lifetime, and we know that the presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500 percent. These are startling statistics that demand immediate action, and that is what we have delivered today.
This legislation will help protect women by preventing these dangerous weapons from falling into the hands of dangerous individuals.
