St. John’s hosted author Thelma Reese to discuss her newest book, “The New Senior Man: Exploring New Horizons, New Opportunities,” on May 7.
The book features St. John’s Brickstone resident Dick Gollin as one of Reese’s many interviewees. More than 45 St. John’s residents and community members gathered at Brickstone by St. John’s for the event.
Like a conversation among friends, the book introduces readers to new ways of looking at the present and the future so men may cultivate a lifestyle that not only suits them, but supports a healthy, rewarding and enjoyable reframing of life.
During the event, Reese read excerpts from her book and shared the stories of “the role models among the men who, at this critical turning point in their lives, continue to redefine and reinvent their lives.” A book signing occurred after the reading.
“We were honored to host Thelma this afternoon to discuss her newest book,” said St. John’s Vice President of Senior Housing Paul Bartlett. “Thelma visited St. John’s in 2015 when she first published ‘The New Senior Woman,’ and it was a huge hit. Today was extra special since our very own Dick Gollin is featured in ‘The New Senior Man.’”
Gollin’s story is featured in Chapter 6, where he discusses the challenges that come with aging in stride. As a retired University of Rochester English professor, he shares his and his wife’s journey from their three-story home to their bungalow at St. John’s.
