DestinationFLX officially announces that Knucklehead Craft Brewing and Lake Drum Brewing were selected as 2018 Final Pour winners in the O.G. and New School brackets, respectively.
The online bracket contest kicked-off in April and culminated with celebrations at each winner’s establishment.
The Final Pour engaged beer enthusiasts from across the FLX region to select favorite local craft brews of the year, divided into two categories: “New School,” breweries 3 years old and younger; and “OG,” older than 3 years. The inaugural version of this annual contest garnered 32,262 votes and provided a chance to spotlight the local craftsmanship that is making the Finger Lakes a top brewing destination. Less competition that marketing tool for the region’s breweries, the contest was designed entirely to support this burgeoning industry.
“DestinationFLX strives to be the premiere Finger Lakes promotion and event platform and this contest was our effort to spotlight local breweries elevating the craft, and driving visibility and traffic to their establishments,” said DestinationFLX Founder Michael Mills. “It was extraordinary to learn that Lake Drum’s ‘Bad Dog IPA,’ which won the New School Bracket, became their top selling beer during the contest — it proves the power of spotlighting these amazing brewers.”
Final Pour broke FLX breweries into four brackets — Rochester, West, Central and East — and a selection committee chose four beers for each of the New School and OG brackets. Online voting started in early April with voters selecting their winner in each “match-up” via the bracket. Breweries promoted participation through social media and at their establishments during the contest, as did DestinationFLX, which received more than 18,000 visitors to its @flxregion Twitter account during the contest.
“A huge thank you to the sponsors, breweries and selection committee who helped make this initial contest a huge success,” said Mills. “The real heroes of this effort are the breweries that promoted their participation and the voters who made their voices heard — we cannot wait for an even more successful event in 2019.”
DestinationFLX weaves social responsibility throughout their events and several boxes of food were collected with the help of the finalists, for Food Link Inc., upstate New York’s Feeding America affiliate.
The contest will return in 2019 but the online bracket will culminate in an Ithaca beer festival, with voters tasting and selecting their favorite from the four finalists in each category. The festival will rotate to a different Finger Lakes city each year.
