The 49th annual Al Sigl Sports Classic Golf Tournament will be held June 11 at Midvale Country Club, 2387 Baird Road, Penfield; tee times are 7 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
In 1969, when Al Sigl volunteer Sam Gaglio asked friends to join him in organizing a charity tournament, Al Sigl’s flagship building on the corner of Elmwood and South avenues had just opened its doors a year earlier. Al Sigl’s founding board chair, Justin Vigdor, of Pittsford, remembers the time well.
“Things were beginning to happen in regards to accessibility,” said Vigdor.
With no existing model to follow, Vigdor led a small group of parents and advocates pursuing a dream. Together they forged a new way for independent agencies to share space while maintaining distinct missions and programs. They envisioned a fully-accessible building, the first of its kind in the region, with spaces adaptable to the unique needs of each agency, along with shared spaces open to all.
In 1969, the organization served 3,000 people with special needs annually. Today, Al Sigl Member Agencies serve more than 55,000 children and adults and their families on Al Sigl’s six campuses.
“Our beginnings at Elmwood were relatively humble compared to our current configuration,” said Vigdor. “Watching the organization’s growth over time has been especially rewarding, as has the generous community support over the years for events like the Sports Classic that raise funds to benefit Al Sigl Community of Agencies.”
“I’ve been to many golf tournaments over the years but this truly is the best. It’s always first class in every way,” said Vigdor, who has participated in the tournament in nearly each of its 49 years. “We have been blessed by what I have characterized as ‘Al Sigl weather’ virtually every year.”
Vigdor, who is serving as honorary chair of the golf tournament this year, is hopeful for sunny skies once again June 11 at Midvale Country Club as he encourages all others to join him in celebrating abilities and inclusion while raising funds for the Al Sigl Community of Agencies.
“Let’s pitch and putt on their behalf,” said Vigdor.
