The first mission of Lions Clubs International is to support the needs of the visually impaired. Greece Ridge Lions Club recently coordinated a project with Lions in Hamlin, Gates, Chili and Webster to assemble bags of treats and welcome beep baseball players to the Beast of the East Tournament.
Beep baseball is a sport that uses a ball and bases that beep, so players can hear when to hit the ball and where to run to the base. Rochester Area Blind Athletes’ team, the Rochester Pioneers, plays local games as well as travels to tournaments and the annual Beep Baseball World Series.
The five clubs each donated $100. Greece Ridge Lions shopped for cookies, chips, candy, drinks, sunscreen and $25 gift cards for teams from Rochester, Boston, Philadelphia, Long Island and New Jersey.
Greece Ridge Lions loaded the items into reusable bags, and delivered them to the teams before the tournament. Area Lions donated their time to volunteer at the tournament.
