Fireworks can be bought and sold from June 1 - July 5 and December 26 - January 1.

New York State legalized sparklers and small fireworks back in 2014. However, until recently, Monroe County remained an outlier by continuing to uphold their ban on them.

In December of 2017, Monroe County finally joined surrounding counties in legalizing small fireworks and sparklers. They are easy to find in major retailers including Walmart and Target, in addition to tents all around the county.

It is important to note that New York State has legalized the use of sparkling devices that are ground-based, handheld or mounted and produce a shower of colored sparks, colored flames, audible crackling or whistling noise and smoke.

However, the fireworks can’t be bigger than 500 grams.

“Anything that goes up in the air is still illegal,” said Gates Police Officer Dave Keiser.
