Paul Watson Greenhouses is July’s recipient of the Summit Vendor of The Month award, presented at the city of Rochester Public Market on June 30 by The Summit Federal Credit Union.
Paul Watson Greenhouses, the Watson family’s flower and plant farm in Rush, has three employees. And none of the farm’s offerings “spring up” all on their own.
“It keeps us busy,” said Paul Watson, grinning at the understatement. “There’s no downtime.”
Watson, his wife Meg Davis and his sister Karen Watson together raise the farm’s flowers and plants, which are grown mostly for retail sale at the city of Rochester Public Market and are sold directly from the farm to event planners and large customers such as St. John Fisher College and the Strong Museum of Play. Around half the farm’s 10 acres are used as growing land, and several greenhouses dot the property. Everything is hand-watered and hand-tended by the Watson trio.
At the market, the Paul Watson Greenhouses stall is a stop on select Thursdays, most Saturdays, flower days and garage sale Sundays. This will only happen with preparation by the Watson team.
“It takes 40 to 50 hours to load up for the market,” said Davis.
The work continues after the summer. Autumn brings a demand for plants such as mums, flowering kale and cabbage. For the holidays, the Watson team makes wreaths by hand. And by the second week of January, the greenhouses are filled with unrooted cuttings and seedlings in preparation for spring.
The Summit Vendor of the Month award honors those market vendors who, like The Summit, offer locally-grown products and demonstrate a commitment to the Rochester community.
