A dispute in Rushville resulted in a man being charged after grabbing a phone from another person to prevent a call to 911 and shooting it with a rifle

A Rushville man was arrested Monday after shooting a phone to prevent someone from calling for help.

The Yates County Sheriff's Department reports it responded at 11:45 p.m. to 4588 Ward Simmons Road along with Ontario County Sheriff's deputies and Penn Yan police for a domestic incident.

Cameron A. Vanderwall, 23, of that address, was charged with third-degree criminal mischief and two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief for allegedly preventing another person from calling 911 by taking the phone and shooting it with a rifle.

Ontario County deputies later found Vanderwall in Ontario County where he turned himself in without incident after talking with his former school resource officer.

Vanderwall was arraigned in Potter Town Court and sent to jail. He is to re-appear at a later date.
