Summer has arrived, skipping over spring and bringing record high temperatures describing many days as “heat excessive.” We will want to remember these days when we have subzero temperatures this winter. My hope is that you and your family are enjoying some lazy days of summer before school reopens in September. Despite our students and staff being on summer break, things are just as busy here on the Gates Chili Central School District campuses.
The Class of 2018 commencement ceremony was a true celebration of all that our graduates have accomplished. The evening was just perfect, and the sunset was a beautiful way to honor our graduating seniors. We are proud of our Spartan graduates.
The summer months are some of the busiest of the year here in Gates Chili CSD. Summer school opportunities for our students include extensions of the school year to help our students increase proficiency in literacy and math. We are also offering our summer (free) meals program on Mondays-Fridays for breakfast and lunch at Gates Chili High School, Door No. 50. If you need more information please call (585) 247-7213.
We are busy preparing for the new school year set to begin on Sept. 4 for staff and on Sept. 5 for all students. This summer has been packed full of curriculum development, professional development and summer workshops for our staff. In late June, the administrative team had a two-day retreat. Our focus was to identify what the district’s high leverage priorities are to ensure that we have healthy people relationships, and that we are spending time to get to know our staff and our students to better meet the learning needs of both. We will be learner-centered, and we will be exploring culturally responsive teaching practices. This, too, will enable us to provide culturally specific learning opportunities for every child to succeed. Our why — to build relationships and create a culture of respect, responsibility, compassion and hard work so that everyone experiences success.
The board of education participated in a half-day retreat in July to support this important work. They will update goals and strategies for the district that will help each building, each principal, each staff member and each student develop goals that are truly aligned throughout the district. Our senior Class of 2019 will certainly lead the way for a very successful school year preparing them for college, career and civic readiness.
Be sure to check out my Twitter account, @gateschilisupt, for a view into our buildings and district all year long. Our efforts will look to improve communication, increase Spartan pride and showcase the outstanding educational opportunities Gates Chili CSD offers. Our newsletter is no longer being printed and mailed home; our website will feature the many contents you are accustomed to seeing in the newsletter, along with a district calendar that will keep track of events and activities in real time. Be sure to download our Gates Chili CSD app — it has exciting capabilities that I am sure many will find informative and helpful.
The board of education conducted its reorganization meeting on July 10 at 6 p.m. Additional summer board of education meetings will be held on Aug. 14 and Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. On Aug. 14, we hope to formally unveil our food bus. Thank you to the many donations from vendors, including the bus and labor from our skilled mechanics and maintenance team. We will resume our normal meeting dates and times in September.
Early in September, we will host a ribbon-cutting event as we officially begin capital improvement project construction. Construction has already begun for the track and stadium work at the high school, along with summer roof replacements. The Brasser Elementary classrooms addition has been approved, and will bid late this summer; construction will be underway before the holidays. We have submitted Paul Road and the middle school, and the high school auditorium addition will be off to NYSED in August. Both Armstrong and Disney are still in the design phase, and will be submitted around the first of the new calendar year 2019.
It is a pleasure and an honor to serve as the superintendent of Gates Chili CSD. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you this fall. Be sure to save the date: Homecoming, with many events and activities, stats the week of Sept. 28. Our Hall of Fame induction will celebrate 25 years identifying extraordinary Spartans, making a difference and changing the world.
