A 5-year-old girl from Rochester was killed after police say the pickup truck she was riding in crossed over a highway median and struck an oncoming pickup truck in Sullivan County.

The sheriff's office says the crash happened just before 3 p.m. Monday on Route 17 in Monticello. Deputies came upon the crash scene and performed CPR on 5-year-old Charkeilys Viera of Rochester, before she was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The child's sister, 14-year-old Charleilys Viera, and their father, 50-year-old Carmelo Viera, were flown to Westchester Medical Center. Police say they're in critical condition.

Deputies say Charkeilys was not in a car seat at the time of the crash, and no one in the front seat appeared to be wearing seatbelts.

A couple and their two teenage daughters were in the other pickup truck and were treated for injuries.

"This was a horrific end to the holiday weekend," Sheriff Michael Schiff said. "The accident occurred in one of the few spots on Route 17 that does not have a center median barrier".
