A pit bull was shot and killed by members of the Rochester Police Department's SWAT team Thursday morning.

Police say SWAT officers were executing a search warrant involving weapons and narcotics at a home on St. Paul Street around 6:20 a.m. Two officers were moving from their positions when a pit bull that police describe as aggressive charged at the officers, causing them to shoot the animal.

Police tell Messenger Post's news partner, News10NBC, the dog was off his leash in a fenced-in area after being let out by its owners, who police say weren't involved in the initial investigation.

Multiple firearms and narcotics were recovered inside the home and a person of interest related to the search warrant is in custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
