RAPA Family Theatre and OFC Creations will mount “The Emperor’s New Clothes” on Oct. 13-21 at the Kodak Center, 200 W. Ridge Road, Rochester.
The Hans Christian Andersen tale follows a mother and son as they plead with the emperor for funds to bring the arts back to town. Much to their disappointment, the emperor sends them away as he is caught up in his own self-absorbed vanity.
They decide to disguise themselves as weavers and return to the palace with the offer of a remarkable outfit for the highest price. The duo crafts a theatrical tale, fabling the clothes to be invisible to those who are unfit for their positions or incompetent. In reality, though, they make no clothes at all.
The family-friendly production is in partnership with visual artist Cordell Cordaro, a Rochester artist who designed the set. Cordaro’s work includes paintings, ink drawings and combinations of the two.
Audiences will get insight into being a stage performer and visual artist through lobby displays, educational activities and post-show talk-backs with director Eric Vaughn Johnson.
The show features four adult actors returning to the RAPA Family Theatre stage: Hunter Ekberg as the son, Nicolas; Marge Mattioli as the mother, Louise; Allan O’Grady Cuseo as the emperor; and Mandi Lynn Griffith Gurell as the captain.
Performances of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” are set for 11 a.m. on Oct. 13 and Oct. 20, 2 p.m. on Oct. 13-14 and Oct. 20-21, and 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 14, which is a sensory-friendly show.
All performances are approximately one hour in length plus a short intermission. Children can meet the cast after each performance for photo opportunities and autographs.
RAPA Family Theatre will continue its sensory-friendly performance program geared toward audience members with autism and other needs developed by RAPA and Monroe BOCES-2.
Tickets cost $20 for adults, $18 for students and seniors, and $10 for ages 12 and younger. Discounted season tickets are on sale for the five-production series, which continues with “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” “Amelia Earhart,” “The Adventures of Peter Rabbit” and “Honk.”
