The Rochester Fire Department has a warning for smokers after crews believe cigarette butts are to blame for an overnight house fire in Charlotte.

Investigators say there were so many cigarette butts; it may have caused the fire to spread even faster.

It happened at a duplex on Alpha Street near Beach Avenue in Charlotte around midnight.

Fire crews say two garbage totes caught fire and then spread to the back of the home. Investigators say smokers need to be careful when throwing out cigarettes.

"When you burn it all night, the next day, if you stick your hand in it, you can still get burnt," RFD Battalion Chief Patrick Agostinelli tells News10NBC. “Even the appropriate container can retained enough heat to get a fire going and that's what happened tonight."

Everyone inside made it out safely.

The house has minor damage.
