Webster Schroeder High School Regents and advanced placement chemistry teacher Siobhan Julian is the recipient of the 2018 Science Teachers Association of New York — STANYS — Excellence in Teaching Award for the high school level.
Julian epitomized Webster Central School District’s vision: compassionately connected, joyfully engaged, always learning; and she also exemplifies the qualities of STANYS’ mission. They are to promote excellence in science education, to work with educators and communities to provide opportunities for all students to participate in and learn science, to support student-centered education that excites and invites participation by all students and to share exemplary curriculum and effective teaching practices based on research.
In the classroom, Julian employs teaching strategies that include process oriented guided inquiry learning, flipped learning and modeling, all of which engage her students to be active learners.
WCSD Director of Science and Technology Bill Ottman wrote a letter of recommendation for Julian. In it, he shared her love for her students.
“That love drives her to be the best teacher possible,” Ottman wrote.
Julian was presented the honor during STANYS’ annual meeting in November. A teacher from Fairport Central School District, Donna Himmelberg, nominated Julian.
