Mecca’s VIP Beauty Bus, a mobile hair salon primarily serving people with hair loss from cancer and other medical conditions, won $5,000 at the recent KeyBank Business Boost and Build Rochester Pitch Competition at the Rochester Museum and Science Center.
“I feel amazing,” said Mateakka Washington, owner of Mecca’s VIP Beauty Bus. “The $5,000 is going to be used to help so many people in my community and I am so grateful for a program like this.”
Washington will use the prize money to make her business mobile. She plans to start by wrapping and branding the bus she will use for the mobile salon, as well as purchasing a generator and other supplies.
“I think my clients are going to be very grateful,” she said. “They won’t have to suffer from anxiety anymore from going to a salon. I can go to them.”
Mecca’s VIP Beauty Bus was one of five finalists to pitch their business ideas to a panel of local judges. The four other finalists — BoBo’s Chicken Shack, Worker B. Jobs Inc., She Anew and JTCT Erectors — received $500.
“The winning pitch from Mecca’s VIP Hair Salon was unique and inspirational, and highlighted a great night that reflected the enthusiasm and growth that’s fueling all of the wonderful things happening in Rochester and western New York,” said James Barger, president of the KeyBank Rochester market. “Everyone in attendance walked away winners thanks to the collaborative spirit and networking that took place at this competition.”
The pitch competition was presented by the Urban League of Rochester and Ibero-American Action League.
