Our news partner, News10NBC's weather team has put out a First Alert Weather watch for a potential winter storm that's expected to hit our area over the weekend.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - A major winter storm is set to bring heavy snow, gusty winds, and polar air to our area this coming weekend. It's still preliminary but the weather team says based on all the data they have seen, this will bring the heaviest snowfall of the season thus far.

Starting Saturday night through Monday, the team has issued a First Alert Weather Day for our area.

We are still four days out from this storm arriving so the forecast may change.

It is expected that starting Saturday afternoon a deep area of low pressure will pass just south of Rochester, ushering in the most potent snowstorm of the season thus far.

The heaviest of the snow is likely Saturday night into Sunday morning along with high winds that will blow around the snow, reducing visibility and creating deep snow drifts through Sunday.

On Sunday into Monday, after the storm passes, we will still be looking at northerly winds over Lake Ontario creating lake enhanced snowfall.

The cold northerly winds will push the temperature down into the single digits with the wind chill well below zero at times on Sunday into Monday.

For anyone traveling over this holiday weekend, expect significant delays. Not only here in Rochester, but all across the northeastern United States.
