Audition sign-ups are open to people wanting to share their stories of motherhood at “Listen to Your Mother,” a live reading on May 11 at The Hochstein School.
“LTYM” was created by Ann Imig in 2010. The Rochester show is presented by Roc the Mic, an organization founded and led by co-producer Monica Gebell, of Rochester, to shine the light on local stories and voices.
“Six years ago, a group of women sat together at a local cafe to figure out how to bring the ‘Listen to Your Mother’ show to Rochester,” Gebell said. “Our hope was that we could unite our city through the power of storytelling. What it has become is beyond our wildest expectations.”
Now in its fifth year, “Listen to Your Mother Rochester” has welcomed nearly 2,500 audience members to the production, given over 50 people a microphone to tell their stories about motherhood and raised over $30,000 to help the Society for the Protection and Care of Children, which supports the city’s most at-risk families.
“Our casts share their true stories of gutsy mothers and sassy grandmothers, role models, and beacons of hard-won wisdom,” said Corrie Spike Carter, of Fairport, executive director of “LYTM Rochester.” “Their stories will make you laugh and they’ll make you cry, but more than that each story has the power to connect and unite us, if you just listen.”
This will be the first time “LTYM Rochester” is staged at Hochstein. Former cast members Erin Julian, of Rochester, and Raquel Walker, of Irondequoit, will join Carter and Gebell in producing and directing this year’s show — Julian as co-producer, director of communications and Walker as director of community relations and diversity.
Auditions will be held on March 3, 7 and 9 at Writers & Books, 740 University Ave., Rochester, for writers and non-writers, men and women, mothers and non-mothers. People can sign up online to audition. Appointments will be first come, first served until all slots are filled.
Audition pieces should not exceed five minutes. Bring a copy of the piece, which will not be returned. Participants need to arrive at least 10 minutes before their appointment to fill out an audition form.
Previously published work is accepted as long as author retains full rights or has express permission to read the work for the event. All selected cast are required to participate in the table read and dress rehearsals that will be scheduled prior to the event.
