The Rochester Contemporary Art Center is declaring March as “6x6” Party Month.
The 12th iteration of this exhibit will run from June 1 to July 14. Entries must be turned in by April 14, or postmarked by April 13. Last year’s event saw 6,000-plus entries.
“Thanks to international and local artists, celebrities, designers, youth, self-proclaimed ‘non-artist’ community members, and some new initiatives, we continue to up our expectations,” said Bleu Cease, RoCo executive director. “With increased entries come increased sales, so that’s a winning combination for all.”
Any group of people can qualify as an art-making party with a minimum of 12 artworks made by at least three people. If needed, blank 6-by-6 inch square boards can be picked up for free at RoCo, 137 East Ave., during business hours.
March 2 has been proclaimed as Make Art Day by Mayor Lovely Warren, a past “6x6” participant.
“I’m excited to declare March 2 Make Art Day, because encouraging the creativity of our children and youth is important to their development and their ability to express ideas in innovative and meaningful ways,” she said. “The city appreciates the efforts of the Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance and RoCo in making Rochester a center of artistic excellence and excitement.”
The Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance will host a community art-making “6x6” party for kids from 2 to 4 p.m. on March 2 at the Lincoln Branch Library, 851 Joseph Ave., Rochester.
On March 1, RoCo will host “Name That Artist,” a local art trivia contest, from 6 to 9 p.m. for First Friday. The first round will start at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $6, or $4 for RoCo members.
Each artist may enter up to four artworks of any medium except glitter. Participation is free. Each entry must be 6 inches square, signed on the back to assure anonymity until purchase and accompanied by a short entry form. All artworks will be for sale for $20 each to benefit RoCo; “6x6” sales provide about 15 percent of RoCo’s annual operating budget.
The opening party will run from 4 to 10 p.m. on June 1. Attendees will be able to enter a raffle to win one of the first 20 buyer positions. Admission is $12, or $8 for RoCo members. Visit for information.
