A CHEER ... to all the responsible St. Patrick's Day revelers who make sure to line up rides and don't drink and drive after the annual parade in Rochester and on the true green day, March 17. Or any other day, for that matter. Too many lives have been lost or ruined because of poor decision-making that leads to someone drinking too much and getting behind the wheel. Play it safe.
A CHEER ... to the casts and crews — and those guiding them — of our Ontario County schools, who pulled out all the stops in staging quality musicals this spring. Some are still being staged this weekend and next. So if you haven't already, head out to see what some of the youths in this community are doing. You won't be disappointed.
A JEER ... one we repeat frequently but which bears repeating ... to scammers, who count on people's lack of knowledge as to how various agencies like the IRS work to fleece folks out of their hard-earned dollars. As tax-time approaches, there's been an uptick in scam and fraud atempt activity, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office notes — for instance, callers posing as an IRS representative claiming that money is owed and threatening an arrest warrant if it's not sent immediately. Or callers offering victims the opportunity to collect a large sum of "winnings" — if they buy gift cards and send the numbers. Jeers to these reprehensible financial predators — and cheers to those, like Ontario County Sheriff Kevin Henderson, who are working to alert people to these operations. (Henderson will be discussing scams and frauds, among other topics, March 25 from 11 a.m. to noon at Victor Parks and Recreation, 7891 Lihigh Crossing.)
A CHEER ... to Belhurst Castle and Winery in Geneva, named by Wine Enthusaist among seven standout wine hotels — the only U.S. venue on the international marketer's list. Wine Enthusiast lauded the amenities of Belhurst's properties — the White Springs farmhouse mansion, the Vinifera Inn and the Castle Chambers Hotel — as well as such features as monthly pairing dinners and a hallway "wine spigot" free-flowing tap. The world gets to find out what we've known in the region all along — Finger Lakes wines, and the venues that feature them, are something special.
A CHEER .. to Keuka College's Political Science, History and Pre-Law Club, for promoting political awareness among the student body and community. The club has begun a campus lecture series featuring local and state polticial figures. The series kickoff on Thursday featured Yates County Legislator Tim Cutler and Yates County Treasurer Winona Flynn; the next one, 3-5 p.m. April 13, will feature Libertarian Party activist and New York gubernatorial candidate Larry Sharpe. The club's members, a bipartisan group, were spurred to increased activity by last fall's voter registration drive, in which 80 students registered to vote.
