The Bushnell’s Basin Fire Department will be participating in the Firefighter Association of the State of New York initiative, Recruit NY.
The fire department will open its doors to the community from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 27 and 28 at the Hitching Post Plaza, 639 Pittsford Victor Road.
Over the last several years, it has been difficult for many fire departments throughout New York state to recruit and retain volunteers for a variety of reasons. This challenge has had an impact on the Bushnell’s Basin Fire Department. The combination of an increase in requests for service and a reduction in the number of volunteers. More volunteers are needed to help continue the excellent service the firemen provide to the community.
At the Bushnell’s Basin events, residents will be invited in to check out the vehicles and equipment, meet the volunteer firefighters and try on firefighting gear and try out firefighting equipment — all while having many photo opportunities. People are needed to help and get involved in their local fire departments and this event will highlight how they can do that.
They will provide residents with an opportunity to see their donations at work while they are recruited to join as volunteer firefighters serving the community. Residents can get a real sense of the time commitments and requirements while experiencing some of the elements of the job — trying on protective gear, using some equipment, climbing aboard apparatus and operating a fire hose. There will be hands-on demonstrations to allow people to participate in their level of comfort.
While the Bushnell’s Basin Fire Department remains well staffed by its 100 percent volunteer staff, the fire department is seeking residents of its fire district to come forward and volunteer.
They are seeking men and women who are at least 18 years old. For residents 14-18 years old, they have a Fire Explorer Post with the Boy Scouts of America.
