The Ugandan Water Project, a local nonprofit organization, will host its 10th annual 5K Race and Kids’ Fun Run at 9 a.m. on April 20 at Rand Lodge in Powder Mills Park, 154 Park Road, Pittsford.
Individuals can register to run or walk in the race for $20 through April 17, after which the cost increases to $25. Children ages 10 and younger can participate in a 1K Fun Run for $5.
Participants registering as a sponsored runner and committing to fundraise or donate a minimum of $50 will have their race fee waived. They will be entered in the running for one of three fundraising prizes: an Amazon Echo Plus, a collection of REI outdoor gear valued at $100 and local gift cards totaling $50. Sponsored runners can form a fundraising team and compete to take home a Ugandan trophy made by UWP project manager Collins Alinaitwe for one year.
This event will help raise more than $30,000 for clean drinking water in communities across Uganda. Designed with experienced runners and casual walkers in mind, this race features live music, food and refreshments, handmade Ugandan crafts available for purchase, bib timing, and race T-shirts for all participants.
“Our 5K is the most exciting charity run of the spring season,” said James Harrington, UWP executive director. “It’s a great way for the Rochester community to play an active role in saving lives halfway around the world.”
UWP’s 5K event is anticipated to raise more than $30,000 for clean water in a single day, an amount which will enable the organization to provide hundreds of thousands of people across Uganda with clean water during the remainder of the year.
