New York Guard volunteer recognized for service
Maj. Geoffrey Milligan, of Rochester, recently received the 30-year Long and Faithful Service Medal. He serves with the New York Guard Headquarters.
The New York Guard is a force of 500 volunteers, organized as a military unit, who augment the state National Guard during emergencies. They provide administrative and logistics support, and have been involved in flood control efforts along the Lake Ontario shoreline this summer.
Unlike members of the National Guard, volunteers do not have a federal military role and do not deploy outside the state.
Girl Scout completes Silver Award project
Bronwyn Lucyszyn, a seventh grader at Gates Chili Middle School, recently completed work for her Girl Scouts Silver Award project. The Silver Award is the second highest honor in Girl Scouts.
Lucyszyn met with administration at Florence Brasser Elementary School for permission to research, design and produce inspirational and uplifting quotes, which she applied on bathroom stalls and walls. Her goal was to remind tweens struggling with self-esteem that they are strong and beautiful, inside and out.
The quotes were crafted out of vinyl that will remain on the stalls for future students. Lucyszyn said the ages between elementary and middle school often are a difficult emotional time, especially for young girls, and she wanted to combat depression and anxiety with these messages.
