Several honored at Thompson nursing ceremony

UR Medicine Thompson Health honored eight associates at its annual nursing awards dinner.

The hospital honored Sarah Boyce (systems thinking and Nurse of the Year), Meggin Rowe (advocacy and moral agency) and Jeanette Storie (clinical judgement), of Canandaigua; Heather Williams (collaboration), of Farmington; Chelsea McConnon (clinical inquiry), of Manchester; Carey VanZandt (collaboration), of Naples; Dorria Sinack (facilitation of learning), of Phelps; and Aaron Parkhurst (caring practices), of Waterloo.

Sheila Brundage, of North Cohocton, and Aaron Fitzgerald, of Geneva, were honored as technicians of distinction. For long-term care, Stanley resident George Cotter was named Nurse of Distinction and Rebecca Bassett, of Canandaigua, was named Certified Nursing Assistant of Distinction.

Patient Transport was named the health system’s Department of Distinction.

 

SUNY recognizes Victor professor for excellence

Izy Grooms, of Victor, received the 2019 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for excellence in teaching.

Grooms, who started at Finger Lakes Community College as an adjunct in 2008, now serves as an associate professor of nutrition and dietetics. In 2017, she launched a new degree program at FLCC, an associate in nutrition and dietetics.

Grooms helped raise $7,300 in scholarship money in 2017 by taking part in a polar plunge. In 2018, she and a colleague created Flick’s Place, a donation closet of items such as cooking utensils, towels, winter coats and bedding available at no charge to students.

Grooms earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University at Buffalo and a master’s degree in nutrition science from Syracuse University.

 

Farmington clerk awarded RMC recertification

Michelle Finley, of Farmington, recently was recertified as a registered municipal clerk by the New York State Town Clerks Association.

Finley has served as town clerk since January 2019 and is a member of the NYS Town Clerks Association.

She attained her RMC designation through education and leadership in various professional and civic organizations.
