A two-year-old boy from Seneca County is in critical condition after deputies say he wandered into the road and was hit by a car.

Deputies responded to Route 5 near Mac's Drive-In in Waterloo around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators say the driver, a 79-year-old woman from Waterloo, was traveling westbound on Route 5 when the toddler walked into the lane and was struck.

The boy was taken to Geneva General Hospital then airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital where he's in critical condition. The driver was treated and released from the hospital

Deputies say the driver was not at fault and are still investigating how the boy was able to wander into the road.

The road was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
