Local square dancing clubs will host open houses throughout September, so that interested dancers can try the steps for free.
Cloverleaf Squares’ open houses are set for 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 and Sept. 22 at First Baptist Church, 3182 Chili Ave., Rochester.
Silver Squares will dance at 1 p.m. on Sept. 16 at Greece Methodist Church, 1924 Maiden Lane, followed by Belles ‘N’ Beaus at 7 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4301 Mount Read Blvd., Rochester.
Copy Cats will hold its open house at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Bay Trail Middle School, 1760 Scribner Road, Penfield.
Square dancing became the most popular form of dancing in the early 1800s, according to the Alliance of Round, Traditional and Square Dance, and 33 states have designated the style as official state dances.
In modern square dancing, four couples form squares and dance as a group. Square dance nights typically cost $5-$6 per person and run for at least two hours. Live callers direct participants through each dance.
