Gates Chili Central School District recently earned the HealthierUS School Challenge Award.
This program, established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, recognizes schools creating healthier school environments through their promotion of good nutrition and physical activity.
HUSSC establishes criteria for schools’ food quality, participation in meal programs, physical activity opportunities and nutrition education — the key components that make for healthy and active kids.
Schools that are doing the very best work to keep kids healthy are recognized and high-achieving schools receive monetary incentives. As part of this award, each elementary school received $500 toward school nutrition programs.
Deborah Beauvais, school nutrition director, presented plaques at a recent Board of Education meeting. Marisa Bellanca, school nutrition coordinator, and school nutrition team members Obie Burden (Paul Road), Martha Fantauzzo (Walt Disney), Georgie Irons (Neil Armstrong) and Andrea Wheatley (Florence Brasser) accepted the awards on behalf of each elementary school.
