People flock to Naples Community Park on Thanksgiving morning for fun and fitness

NAPLES — A Thanksgiving race that raises nearly $2,500 annually for area causes is trotting into its 10th year in Naples.

People of all ages flock to the Naples Turkey Trot 3K or 5K walk/run before heading home to gobble up a Thanksgiving feast. Business sponsors are signing on now. Particpants can register that morning — though your T-shirt must be ordered no later than a week before the event. Per tradition prizes, a raffle and refreshments follow the race.

Naples sports teams will again compete to offer up the greatest number of Turkey Trot participants. The winning team gets a pizza party.

The 10th annual Naples Turkey Trot supports three main causes. A portion of proceeds will also go to Naples Community Park Foundation, which hosts the event, and Naples Scout Troop 40, whose members help out.

Here’s where this year’s Turkey Trot dollars go:

— Naples Hospeace House, at 7824 West Hollow Road, is a two-bedroom comfort care home providing end-of-life care. A not-for-profit run largely by volunteers, Hospeace relies on donations, fundraising and memorial contributions. Hospeace House does not charge residents or their families and receives no insurance reimbursement.

— Naples Open Cupboard/Open Closet is affiliated with Foodlink, a regional food bank serving multiple area counties. Naples Open Cupboard provides food to local families struggling to meet basic needs throughout the year. The Open Closet provides clothing and household goods through community donations. The Naples Open Cupboard/Open Closet is a nonprofit run by volunteers.

— Friends of the Naples Library is the nonprofit arm of the library that raises funds to boost library revenue. Naples Library provides the community with free programs and services such as Teen Space, Specialized Children’s Learning Computer, and enhancements to its Children’s Room.

— The Naples Community Park Foundation is a not-for-profit that puts donations toward park improvements. The park is home to three soccer fields, four baseball fields, two sand volleyball courts, a full-size basketball court, an 18-hole disc golf course, a 1/4 mile jogging track and miles of hiking trails.
