OFC Creations will present Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” in association with the Rochester Latino Theatre Co. on Dec. 13-14 at The Lyric Theatre, 440 East Ave., Rochester.
“In the Heights” features a cast of 50 students ages 10-18 from across Rochester, including Greece, Pittsford, Spencerport and Webster. Many are Rochester City School students and many are performing for the first time. Hunter Ekberg and Meghan Halley direct the project.
“We wanted to offer our students a chance to experience a show not typically done in the Rochester community,” said Eric Vaughn Johnson, OFC executive director. “We needed a strong partner to present the show authentically, which brought us to the Rochester Latino Theatre Co.”
“In the Heights,” written by the author of “Hamilton,” explores three days in the New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights. All of the characters are on the brink of change of who they are, where they are going and who they want to be.
Annette Ramos and Stephanie Paredes from RLTC led the cast in the history of Washington Heights and migration of Latinos into the community, exploring cultures and discussing inclusion.
Cast members worked on “Yo Soy,” a project where students explored various aspects of their identity from food to language and traditions. Projects will be on display in the lobby.
“We want this to be a learning experience on- and off-stage for this amazing cast,” said Ramos, RTLC executive director.
Shows will run at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13, and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Dec. 14. Tickets are available by phone, online and at the door. Call (585) 667-0954 or visit ofccreations.com for information.
