The Flower City Arts Center responded to area school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic by developing and assembling 250 art kits for students in grades 3-6.
Staff distributed these kits to Charles Carroll School No. 46 and RISE Community School No. 106 in the Rochester City School District, as well as Durand-Eastman Intermediate School in the East Irondequoit Central School District.
Kits included almost everything students needed to learn and create. Professional artists from the Arts Center led Zoom classes about creating holograms, layered tissue collages, salt clay art and shoebox projectors.
Kits also provided markers, coloring books, paper for drawing and origami, as well as self-addressed and stamped postcards for students to create a drawing that reflects their time in isolation. These postcards will be displayed in a gallery exhibition once the Arts Center reopens to the public.
The art kits were supported by a grant from the William and Sheila Konar Foundation.
