Dodging the few minutes of rain, two players from the Buffalo Croquet Club recently joined eight from the local club to contend in the 12th annual American Rules Doubles Tournament under mostly sunny skies.
With a waterford-style tournament, each participant played with a different partner for four games, seeding to finals after five rounds of play.
Paul Neubecker, of Buffalo, and Lee Kirk, of Penfield, went up against local players Rich Laging and Denise Ireland in the finals. Demonstrating great break play by running several wickets in one turn, Neubecker and Kirk eventually took first place.
The Rochester Croquet Club welcomes those interested to come out and try the sport. The club plays on fast-rolling bentgrass like a golf green and is a sanctioned club with the U.S. Croquet Association.
