A CHEER ... to the St. Mary's School students who helped clean up Kershaw Park after the recent rain ... and more rain ... and more rain ... and, you get the picture. The children helped pick up sticks and garbage left on the rocks. It's not the easiest of jobs, as City Manager John Goodwin noted. But someone had to do it — and these St. Mary's kids stepped to the plate.

A CHEER ... to sponsors of the Canandaigua Lakefront Art Show for adopting free admission for everyone, making it more accessible to the public. (Submitted by Editorial Board community member Bill Gruschow)

A CHEER … to members of the Phelps-Clifton Springs (Midlakes) Board of Education for their hard work during the search for a new superintendent and their selection of Matthew Sickles of Saratoga County, whose infectious energy and passion for the district radiates and should be an inspiration to students and staff alike.

A JEER ... to any boaters displaying poor lake etiquette by fishing 10-15 feet off an owner's dock while the owner is there trying to enjoy the lake. Owner space is invaded and safety risked when boaters cast near the shore. (Submitted by Editorial Board community member Bill Gruschow)

A CHEER ... to Canandaigua’s Paul Poskus and his green thumb for bringing beauty and new life to the community. The 98-year-old Ferris Hills at West Lake resident has been beautifying the walking grounds of his retirement community for the past three years. Poskus noticed an unusual collection of rocks on the trail and thought it could use a little color. He then selected and planted perennials over the years and is now just maintaining his hard work for himself and others to enjoy.

A CHEER ... to the tight community of Canandaigua and Charlie Riedel’s for rallying together in support of one of its own. Friends and neighbors are hosting a pancake breakfast to benefit longtime resident Kevin Fogarty. Fogarty, who could always be found supporting his son’s football games and events at Red Jacket, was diagnosed in June with terminal cancer. The pancake breakfast is from 8-10:45 a.m. Sunday at Charlie Riedel’s.
