Victor graduate ranks No. 2 in country for faceoffs as Danes prepare for postseason, plus more news and notes on local athletes in college

You never want to look past your next opponent as an athlete, so let’s leave that to fans.

When the NCAA Division men’s lacrosse tournament opens this weekend, there’s a Saturday matchup between the University at Albany and North Carolina. This, of course, means we’ll get to see Victor graduate and Albany freshman TD Ierlan do what he does on faceoffs. In 16 regular-season games for the Danes this season, Ierlan won .722 (286 of 396) percent of his draws, which ranks No. 2 in the country.

So beyond looking forward to that, there’s a potential juicy matchup down the road. Albany is in the same bracket as Denver, which has Trevor Baptiste as its drawman. Baptiste won faceoffs at a .736 clip, No. 1 in the country.

To watch Ierlan and Baptiste go at it at midfield would indeed be a treat to behold, but the road to this potential obviously is not guaranteed. Albany would need to beat North Carolina to advance and play the winner of the Maryland (No. 1 seed) vs. Bryant game. Denver opens with Air Force on Saturday and would then have to beat the winner of the Notre Dame vs. Marquette game.

If that unfolds, we’ll have an Albany vs. Denver matchup in the semifinal on May 27. But even better, we’ll have an Ierlan vs. Baptiste matchup.
