Lancers name returning players for 2021
The Rochester Lancers celebrated its 50th anniversary of winning the 1970 NASL Championship and announced 21 returning players for the 2021 season in TV commercials due to COVID concerns.
Players will wear replica jerseys of that 1970 squad during the MASL season, as well as 1981 Rochester Flash and 1996 Rochester Rhinos jerseys that will be auctioned off to raise money and awareness for Rochester-based charities.
Players were introduced during 50-plus commercial spots on Rochester TV stations.
“The response we received from all of our TV commercials was amazing,” Lancers owner Salvatore “SoccerSam” Fantauzzo said. “Kayla Kent-Moreira, director of operations, received hundreds of ticket renewals and jersey orders. We truly appreciate our Lancers fans and we are honored to continue the Lancers legacy that was started in 1967 by the pioneers of American soccer.”
The biggest signing was the return of midfielder Jake Schindler. He was an original Lancer in 2011 and last played with Rochester during the 2018-19 MASL2 campaign.
“He brings stability on the field,” head coach Doug Miller said. “Jake can play in the back, he can play as a second forward and he can play as a target.”
Also returning are goalkeepers John Ciavaglia, Marcelo Moreira and Brian Wilkin; defenders Tim Crawford, Jeremy Loncao, Zikret Osmic, Jake Reed and Anthony Rozzano; midfielders Frankie Ciliberto, Matt D’Amico, Andriy Demydiv, Rafa Godoi, Jeremy Ortiz and Dan Reger; forwards Michael Cunningham, Austin Gerber, Alex Harling, Darryl Potter, Boomer Steigleman and David Wright; assistant coaches John Berardicurti and Adam Schwartz; and goalkeeper coaches Marcelo Moreira and Marc Sotile.
