They beat Brockport 4-3 to earn the Class A girls tennis sectional title.

The Greece Athena girls tennis team won their first sectional title under coach Don Brown when the team defeated Brockport 4-3 to win the Class A team championship.

Brockport won the first three singles points but Greece was able to win all of the doubles matches and sophomore Christine Mack won at fourth singles over Laura Wright 6-2, 6-4 for the clinching point.

“The girls were really excited and it goes to show you how every point is critical no matter where it comes from,” Brown said. “Everyone is a contributor in tennis and it is individuals but very much a team game.”

The win played out exactly as it did the last time the two schools met which allowed the Trojans to win the league title.

Chelsea Touchstone and Denae Kleehammer won 6-0, 6-1 at first doubles and Emily Beseau and Dilara Kumbul were 6-2, 6-0 winners at second doubles. Dana Cohan and Kira Voyer also earned a point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at third doubles.

The team had to wait seven days to play the title match because of weather and the individual sectionals.

Greece had two doubles teams go far at the individual sectionals. Touchstone and Kleehammer beat teams from Hilton, Canandaigua and Irondequoit before falling to a team from Brockport in the finals.

Kumbul and Beseau reached the semifinals before falling to that same Brockport team.

Both doubles teams will be competing again this weekend at the state qualifier.

Sheri Leege reached the semifinals in singles play, beating Victor and Spencerport players before losing to eventual champion Alyssa Brault of Churchville. Allison DeRose also won a match against a player from Spencerport but fell to Esha Mehta of Victor.
